The Halkidiki peninsula is a large blob to the south-east of Thessaloniki, from which three 'fingers' - three smaller peninsulae - (Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos) which stretch out into the north of the Aegean Sea; each one of them has a different ambiance: Kassandra is the ideal place for cosmopolitan holidays, Sithonia appeals to nature lovers and holiday makers seeking refuge from the trappings of civilization and Athos is the centre of the global Orthodox religion, the chief standard bearer of Orthodox Christianity - an area of mystique, contemplation, and isolation. The climate in Halkidiki is generally mild with limited rainfall whilst sunshine and warm summers are well known.Though don't be surprised by sudden, brief downpour in the heart of the summer. The winters are mild and the summers are long and dry. In the peninsula of Cassandra, there are therapeutic springs, like those in the village of Agia Paraschevi, with good curative properties. Due to its location (close to a big city), Halkidiki offers beautiful scenery and a well-organized infrastructure and satisfies even the most demanding visitor.
